Quibdó

Quibdó is the capital and seat of government of the Departamento del Chocó in northwestern Colombia. The city is situated on the banks of the Rio Atratos in one of the most wooded and wettest regions of Colombia, near the Natural Park Emberá and several indigenous reserves.

Quibdó is the seat of the diocese of Quibdó. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi.

Name

The name is derived from an eponymous Quibdó caciques, whose dominion stretched in the vicinity of the present town.

Geography

Quibdó capital is a largely untouched and most forested provinces of Colombia. The predominant form of vegetation is the tropical rain forest of the Pacific coast. The city is located on one of the most water-rich rivers in the world in terms of its surface area, the Río Atrato.

History

The city was given in 1648 by Indians to Fray Matías Abad and the Franciscan Order and named citara. Over time, it was burned down by the Native Americans during various incidents on fire. 1654 was built by the Jesuit Pedro Caceres and Francisco de Orta the location again. Until 1690, there were settlements on the lands of caciques Guasebá and Quibdó under the leadership of Don Manuel Cañizales, a mining prospector from Antioquia. 1702 increased the number of inhabitants and the city was named after the colonists Francisco de Berro San Francisco de Quibdó. Population

The predominant population groups in Quibdó are afrokolumbianischer descent or include indigenous tribes such as Emberá and Waunanas to. It is estimated that approximately 30,000 inhabitants Quibdós below the poverty line. Chocó is one of the poorest provinces of Colombia as a result of unemployment, malnutrition, lack of medical care and flooding disasters.

Climate

The climate in Quibdó is determined by moist humid equatorial tropical temperatures and high rainfall.

Economy

Quibdó belongs to the Colombian cities with the highest unemployment rate (as of February 2011).

Tourism

The city has several tourist attractions such as the cathedral, the Palacio Municipal, Palacio Episcopal, the Covenant of Clare Tianer and the monument of the poet César.
