Reggio Emilia

Reggio Emilia? / I, (also Reggio Emilia), until 1861 Reggio di Lombardia, (Latin Regium Lepidi, celtic rigion / region), is a northern Italian province capital on the southern edge of the Po Valley with 163 928 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

She is a modern industrial city with a historic center (Centro Storico ), located in the Emilia-Romagna region and is the capital of the province of Reggio Emilia.

History

The Roman name of the city Regium Lepidi goes back to the Roman consul Mark Aemilius Lepidus, the builder of the Via Aemilia. However, it is assumed that the naming and the foundation of the town was already in pre-Roman times by the Celtic Boii residents, who were subjected to 189 BC and Romanized by the Romans. So we called in the Celtic language with rigion a neutral place where the tribal chiefs met for meetings and negotiations. 489 was the control of the city to the Germanic Goths and over 569 built by the Lombards engaging the Duchy of Reggio. Canossa

After 900 Reggio came under the rule of the Canossa family, a Lombard nobility family, whose ancestral castle of Canossa was located a few kilometers southwest of Reggio.

Selva Litana

Very close to Reggio Emilia is also to the sacred forest of the Gauls, the Selva Litana have found where an army of the Boii 218 BC, several Roman legions ( 25,000 men ) massacred under the command of Lucius Postumius Albinus to the last man.

Episcopal

The cathedral is co-cathedral of the diocese of Reggio Emilia- Guastalla ( Ecclesiastical Province of Modena Nonantola, Church Emilia -Romagna).

City of National Flag

The Italian national flag is due to Reggio Emilia, for the green-white- red flag in Italian Tricolore, the Tri-color, called, has its origin there. The idea came from Ludovico Bolognini the engineer whose design was adopted in 1797 by representatives from Reggio Emilia, Modena, Ferrara and Bologna as a symbol of the Cisalpine Republic.

She was later adopted as the national flag of the Kingdom of Italy. The original is on display in the Town Hall.

  • Cathedral, built in the 13th century, renovated in 15-16. Century, on the eastern side of the Piazza Prampolini with unfinished Renaissance facade, behind the Romanesque building. Are located on the façade and in the interior sculptures by Prospero Spani († 1584), called il Clemente, a pupil of Michelangelo, and by Bartolomeo Spani, both from Reggio.
  • Church of San Prospero, 1514-1527, southeast from the cathedral. At the 1748 renewed facade are six of the marble lions exist. Inside there are frescoes by Camillo Procaccini ( 1585-1589 ). Belongs to the church an octagonal campanile.

Economy and infrastructure

The Reggio Emilia province was long agrarian; typical products are still parmesan cheese and Lambrusco. In the 20th century industry, especially agricultural technology, but also Mechatronics and ceramic tiles developed.

Reggio Emilia is also the headquarters of Max Mara.

The city is well integrated on the Via Emilia, the Autonahn A1 and the railway line Milan -Bologna in the Italian long-distance network. Two kilometers east of the city center is the small airport of Reggio Emilia, the general aviation is mainly used. In Bologna is the nearest major commercial airport.
