Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila

The Archdiocese of Manila (Latin: Archidioecesis Manilensis ) includes the cities of Manila, Makati City, Pasay City, Mandaluyong City, Kalookan, parts of Pasig City and Quezon City and the municipalities of San Juan, Taguig City, Pateros, Malabon City and Navotas City.

History

The diocese of Manila was founded on February 6, 1579, suffragan of the Archdiocese of Mexico during the pontificate of Gregory XIII. established and collected on 14 August 1595 Clement VIII to the archbishopric. The historically famous priests of the Archdiocese include Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora that went along with Mariano Gómez than the Gomburza trio in the history of the Philippines. Bishop Rufino Jiao Santos was created in 1960 as the first Filipino cardinal. A well-known cardinal of the Archdiocese was also Jaime Lachica Sin; he supports actively the 1986 EDSA Revolution that led to the overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos.
