Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Porto Velho

The Archdiocese of Porto Velho (Latin: Portus Archidioecesis Veteris ) is a located in Brazil Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Porto Velho in Rondônia state.

History

The Archdiocese of Porto Velho on May 1, 1925, Pope Pius XI. built out of territory of the dioceses Amazon and São Luiz de Cáceres as Territorialprälatur Porto Velho and the archbishopric of Belém do Pará assumed as suffragan. On March 1, 1929, the Territorialprälatur Porto Velho gave parts of their territory establishing the Territorialprälatur Guajará -Mirim. The Territorialprälatur Porto Velho was placed under the Archdiocese of Manaus as Suffragan on 16 February 1952. On 26 June 1961, the Territorialprälatur Porto Velho were parts of their territory from the foundation of the Territorialprälatur Humaitá. A further transfer of territory took place on 3 January 1978 establishing the Territorialprälatur Vila Rondônia.

On October 16, 1979, the Territorialprälatur Porto Velho was elevated by Pope John Paul II to the Pontifical Bull Cum praelaturae to the diocese. The Diocese of Porto Velho was raised on 4 October 1982 Archdiocese.
