Saint-Dié-des-Vosges

Saint- Dié -des-Vosges ( German outdated Saint Didel ) is a commune with 21 361 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. Located at the edge of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges, with which it is associated.

History

The city's name dates back to a legendary hermit Deodatus, Bishop of Nevers, who reportedly died in the year 679.

In 1507 was published in St. Didel by Martin Waldseemüller a map in which the newly discovered continent of America was first so named - Amerigo Vespucci after, the Waldseemüller and Matthias ring man attributed the discovery.

The French influence in the region, which was part of the Holy Roman Empire took steadily. In the late 17th century, Alsace was annexed by France, Lorraine fell in 1766 to France. From the 1871 built Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine attracted to some Alsatians.

Traffic

In the city the N59 starts to Nancy, Strasbourg or Colmar lead towards some very winding country roads through the Vosges. The Strasbourg Airport is 95 km far from the Euro Airport Basel 125 km away. Regular regional trains connect the city with Nancy and Strasbourg. Once a day (in the morning back in the evening ) operates a direct TGV to Paris.
