Economy and infrastructure

The economic development of the town was in the postwar years marked by the coal mine rat St.Kathrein. After closing the lignite mining in 1960 but many of the people living in the so-called colony families and individuals were forced to look for work in the near and further away. This was a strong move, and the population sank within a short time, almost half of the time around 1800 inhabitants.

As a result of this marked change in the economic situation of the town has changed in a relatively short time to a tourism industry that was in the 1960s, still in development. It is the former leaders managed to put some accents in the tourism industry ( they called it at that time as a summer resort ), and it evolved into a reasonably well-functioning summer tourism. In the 1970s, a double chairlift system was built on the Hauereck to create with the aim of both the summer and winter for a new sports and hiking attraction.

As well as in other regions, this project was subject to a large interaction, and the summer was shut down relatively quickly. The winter however was relatively successful endeavor and was provided only by snowless winter in its economy in question. It was not until the late 1990s, a private group has been found to take the ski lift and was also willing to make major investments, the region developed again to a relatively well known and appreciated for winter sports.

Today, St. Kathrein offers the ski region Hauereck to a equipped with a quad chairlift and snowmaking equipment Winter sports center and is open to visitors from the immediate environment, but also from the neighboring countries of Hungary and the Czech Republic, one often frequented winter sports area.
