Santi Cosma e Damiano, Lazio

Santi Cosma e Damiano is a municipality in the province of Latina in the Italian region Latium, located about 6920 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 151 km southeast of Rome and 98 km to the east of Latina.

Geography

Santi Cosma e Damiano is located on the eastern slopes of the Monti Aurunci. It's almost grown together with the neighboring Castel Forte. While the district Ventosa is located above the main town in the mountains, the districts Cerri Aprano, Grunuovo, Pilone and San Lorenzo extend in the plane of the Garigliano, which marks the border with Campania.

Santi Cosma e Damiano is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Monti Aurunci.

The nearby towns are Castel Forte, Minturno, Coreno Ausonio (FR) and Sessa Aurunca (CE).

History

The place was probably made in the migration period, when the inhabitants of the coastal plain examined more easily defensible spaces in the nearby mountains. The first mention of Santi Cosma e Damiano 830 in the Codex Diplomaticus Cajetanus. Since the Middle Ages it belonged to the Duchy Traetto. 1809-1820 and 1928-1947, it was associated with Castel Forte in a community.
