Selling England by the Pound

Occupation

Selling England by the Pound (English for " England sell by the pound ") is the fifth studio album by British rock band Genesis. It was released in October 1973 and it is a further highlight of the progressive rock phase of Genesis in the 1970s. Firth of Fifth ( a reference to the Firth of Forth ) and The Cinema Show are just like Dancing with the Moonlit Knight of the most popular songs of the progressive phase of Genesis. With I Know What I Like ( In Your Wardrobe ) and the first hit single from Genesis on the album was included, which is located today in the live repertoire of Genesis. For many fans, Selling England by the Pound belongs together with Foxtrot to the best albums of the band.

Background

In terms of the music, the band perfected their symphonic musical styles and dramatic suspense. Thus, about Dancing with the Moonlit Knight from numerous contradictory built parts where you will find each back references and citations of other parts, in Firth of Fifth, however, is the processing of a subject in the foreground. Characteristic is also the frequent use of odd time signatures ( for example, in The Battle of Epping Forest, Firth of Fifth ) and a comprehensive set of tools, which includes not only the classic line-up, organ and mellotron, the flute, oboe, synthesizers and metal drums.

Lyrically prevail - the albums title suggests - songs with modern and socially critical content before. In contrast to earlier works appear historical or mythological themes in favor of more contemporary references in the background or canceled. So Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is a satirical view of British society, while The Battle of Epping Forest is concerned with fighting youth gangs in the same county. With the title More Fool Me is also the second and last track of the Gabriel - era on the album, which was sung by the later Genesis singer Phil Collins.

Selling England by the Pound is one of the most influential progressive rock albums ever. The sound as well as many musical phrases and melodies (as in Firth of Fifth and The Cinema Show ) found many imitators, particularly in the neo- prog (eg, Marillion, IQ) and retro- Prog ( for example, Spock's Beard, Änglagård ).
