Solnechnogorsk

Solnechnogorsk (Russian Солнечногорск ) is a city in Russia with 52 944 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is located in the Moscow Oblast on the M10 highway and the railway line St. Petersburg - Moscow, around 65 km north-west from Moscow.

History

Solnechnogorsk walked out of the village called Solnechnaya Gora - to German Sonnenberg - shows that had existed at the site of the present city since the early 18th century. 1851 was also the settlement Podsolnetschny when laying the railway line St. Petersburg - Moscow in the immediate vicinity of the village. The two villages were merged in 1928 to the settlement Solnechnogorsky, which became a city in 1938 and since then bears the name Solnechnogorsk.

Due to the attractive landscaped location of the city - in the vicinity is a 7 km ² Senesch Lake - applies the environment of Solnechnogorsk a popular recreational area in the Moscow metropolitan area. The lake was dammed artificially in the construction of a canal between the rivers Sestra and Istra in the 1820s and is still used today for swimming and windsurfing.
