Geography

Geographical Location

Sonnen is located in the Donau -Wald in the lower Bavarian Forest and is the highest municipality in the district of Passau at an altitude of 700 to 900 meters. To Passau is 28 km, 9 km to Hauzenberg and forest churches or Wegscheid both 13 km. The border with Upper Austria is just 8 km away.

Climate

Despite the high location of the municipality, which suggests a harsh climate, there is an annual average of more sunshine hours than in most other communities in eastern Bavaria. But there are also significantly harsher winter than in the deep layers of Passau, and often blowing a strong, cold wind from the northeast, the so-called Bohm wind. Most of the houses were built in a sheltered, south-west facing position, to avoid the unpleasant winds. It is also good to watch when a storm front from the Czech Republic over the 1300 meters high marginal ridge of high Ficht pulling them to the Bavarian.

History

Between 1130 and 1150 a Eberhardus de Sona gave a hearing to the then Bishop of Passau.

The former village in the Bishopric of Passau in 1803 with the largest part of the hochstiftischen area in favor of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand III. secularized and fell until 1805 to Bavaria. Mayor

Mayor is Hans Binder (CSU ). He won in the local elections in 2008 with a vote share of 58.5 % against Rudolf Raab of the Christian voter community.

Finances

In 2011, the municipal tax revenue amounted to € 640 thousand, of which € 124 thousand commercial tax revenue ( net).

Culture and sights

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in the years 1858-61, designed by Leonhard Schmidtner.
