Geographical Location

Witzmannsberg lies in the Donau -Wald Bavarian Forest on the northeastern district border to Freyung -Grafenau west across the Ilz. The community is located near the B85 and the access road to the motorway 3 To Passau or to Grafenau in the opposite direction it for 22 km, to Vilshofen on the Danube 26 km and 24 km of forest churches.

History

Since 1310 Witzmannsberg is detected as a noble residence. The owners of the manor changed frequently. In the map of Philipp Apian in 1568, it is registered as Witzmansperg.

By 1688, the marriage Trauner came into the possession of Witzmannsberg. This built here a castle with a chapel. Since 1762 it belonged to the counts of Taufkirchen. The village was part of the Electorate of Bavaria and formed a closed Hofmark whose seat was Witzmannsberg. In the municipality, there was also the noble seats Grossenzersdorf and Walt village. The castle was burnt down in 1742 by the Pandurs - Colonel Franz von der Trenck and later demolished. Created in 1818 the current municipality.

Culture and sights

In 1704 Ignatius had Freiherr von Traun, owner of Hofmark Witzmannsberg, a chapel built in a hollow. Due to a well-house next door it is called Bruendl Chapel. According to legend, the sick daughter of an earl was cured by the water of a overnight sprung source. When it snowed it to Mary Snow in the middle of August and only a single point on the Danglwiese remained free of snow, was the seen as a sign to build a chapel here.
