Stoke-on-Trent

The city of Stoke -on-Trent ( Stoke too short, The Six Towns ( engl. the six cities) or The Potteries (called the Potteries ) ) is an amalgamation of several cities in the Midlands in England.

Stoke -on-Trent is located in almost the same distance to major cities in the north of England such as Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Liverpool and Sheffield. The town itself takes its name from the city district Stoke- upon- Trent.

The urban development flows into the city of Newcastle -under- Lyme, but which is managed independently. Both cities have a combined population of about 350,000 inhabitants.

The city's motto is Vis Unita Fortior what can be translated as: United Strength has more power.

The city is governed differently than most other English cities by a directly elected mayor.

A twinning links Stoke -on-Trent and Erlangen.

History

The Federation of the Six Towns led in 1910 the districts of Hanley, Burslem, Longton and Stoke- upon- Trent with the districts of Tunstall and Fenton as a common County Borough of Stoke -on-Trent together. Stoke -on-Trent got 1925 City status.

Although the city was named after Stoke- upon- Trent and the administration has its headquarters there as well, the center of the city lies in Hanley. The county status of the city itself was founded in 1974 eliminated, and the city became part of the county of Staffordshire. For stand-alone county ( Unitary Authority), the city was again on 1 April 1998.

Since the 17th century the area was known for its pottery. Well-known brands such as Royal Doulton, Spode, Wedgwood and Minton were settled here. Even today testify blackened brick buildings of this past. The history of this industry holds the Gladstone Pottery Museum awake, an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH ).

The economic development of pottery was also marked by the construction of the Trent and Mersey Canal, a so-called Narrowboat Canal. This was the first available transport for bulk goods in the context of the industrial revolution.

In recent years, Stoke -on-Trent suffered from the economic downturn within the English ceramic industry. This unemployment rose in this area considerably.

The motto of Stoke -on-Trent is Vis Unita Fortior ( commonality is the strength ). It is also found on the arms of the city.
