Suat Atalık

Suat Atalik ( born October 10, 1964 in Istanbul ) is a leading Turkish chess master. He has (until 1985 ) and the Chess Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina played even for the French Chess Federation (2000 to 2005).

1988 Atalik International Master in 1994 and Grand Master. He was the first Turk ever to was awarded this item. His major achievements include Tournament Win in Budapest in 1992, Satu Mare in 1994, Karditsa 1994, Hastings ( Masters) in 1995, Aegina in 1996, Beijing in 1996, Ikaria 1997, Ljubljana 1997, Chicago 1997, Budapest 1998, Alushta 1999, Los Angeles 1999 ( shared with Tony Miles, Alexander Beliavsky and Lubomir Ftáčnik ), Nova Gorica 2000 Podlehnik 2001, Mar del Plata 2003, Zenica 2004, Berkeley in 2005, Pula 2005 Oberwart 2005, Kavala, 2005. 2006 he won the C- tournament in Wijk aan Zee and the Mediterranean Championships in Antalya.

Mid-November 2003 won Atalik the 7th Bavarian Open Championship in Bad Wiessee am Tegernsee before Döttling Fabian, who had just got awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE.

He represented Turkey at the Chess Olympiads in 1984, 1986, 1988, 1992, 1994 and 1998. 2000 he wanted to strengthen the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina after disputes with the Turkish Chess Federation, but denied him the FIDE participation on procedural grounds. At the Olympic Games in 2002 and 2004, however, he played for the South Slav country. In 2006, however, he again fought for Turkey.

In 2006 he took after prolonged abstinence in the championship of Turkey in Istanbul, where he was second behind the choice of Turks Mikhail Gurevich. In 2007 he won the Turkish Individual Championship for the third time after 1987 and 1988.

In 2007 he won in Cannes, the 4th Mediterranean Championship after scoring against Manuel Apicella. In 2012, he was blocked by the Turkish Chess Federation for 15 months. Atalik had refused to sign a statement, to be committed to the Turkish players to let foreign missions previously approved by the Chess Federation. After the Greek Chess Federation took over this barrier, he played in August 2012, a match against his wife in the Greek Chalkida, which he won with 9,5:4,5.

He has been married since November 2005, the Russian chess grandmaster Polownikowa Yekaterina ( born in 1982 ). His Elo rating is 2603 (as of September 2012), so that it leads the Turkish Elo rankings. His previous highest Elo rating was 2632 in April 2006.
