Swimming at the 2012 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 metre breaststroke

The competition 100m breaststroke Women at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was held on 29 and 30 July 2012 in the London Aquatics Centre. 46 athletes took part.

There were six heats. The 16 fastest swimmers of all heats qualified for the two semi-finals, which were held on the same day. For the finals the next day here qualified the fastest eight starters on both runs. To determine the last launch site had to be sandwiched between two simultaneous swimmers an elimination race.

Elimination race

Atkinson (JAM ) and van axes ( CAN) suggested in their first semi-final at the same time. Her time of 1:07,48 min both were qualified for the final. But since it was only a starting place, had an excretion swimming contest the two athletes. This took place after the other contests on the same evening.

Final

Winner Rūta Meilutyte made ​​the first Olympic medal win and win for Lithuania in Olympic swimming. At age 15 she was the youngest Olympic champion in London and the youngest winner in the history of the discipline. Satomi Suzuki took care of the first Japanese medal in this discipline. Meilutyte and Jamaica's Alia Atkinson managed to get in this competition to improve the local record it twice. Breeja Larson ( USA) caused a false start, but was not disqualified because the starting mechanism was faulty. The repair caused a delay in the start.
