Tomas Barrón is a province in the northern part of the Oruro Department in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Tomas Barrón province is one of sixteen provinces in the Oruro Department. It lies between 17 ° 34 'and 17 ° 46' south latitude and between 66 ° 56 ' and 67 ° 09 ' west longitude. It is bordered to the north and west by the La Paz Department, and to the south and east by the province of Cercado.

The province extends over 25 km from east to west and about 30 km in north-south direction.

Population

Most important idioms of the province are Spanish and Aymara, spoken by 87 percent and 82 percent of the population; 8 percent of the population speak Quechua. 48 percent of the population is younger than 15 years.

49 percent of workers are employed in agriculture, 1 percent in mining, 11 percent in industry, 39 percent in the service sector ( 2001).

66 percent of the population is Catholic, 27 percent are Protestant (1992).
