Tortona

Tortona ( Piedmontese Tortonian -a in the local dialect Turtona ) is a town with 26 329 (as of 31 December 2012) inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont in Italy, on the right bank of the river Scrivia.

Geography

Tortona is located at an altitude of 122 m above sea level. Sea level and has a footprint of 99.29 km ² 26 678 inhabitants (as at 31 October 2005).

The city is the pass gate to the valleys Curone, Grue, Ossona and Borbera. The neighboring municipalities are Alessandria, Bosco Marengo, Carbonara Scrivia, Carezzano, Castelnuovo Scrivia, Paderna Pontecurone Pozzolo Formigaro, Sale, Sarezzano, Spineto Scrivia, Viguzzolo, Villalvernia, Villaromagnano.

History

The city is pre-Roman origin and is surrounded by wine-growing regions ( see also the article Tortonesi ). In the year 120 BC Tortona was founded under the name of Colonia Iulia Dertona and was an important military base on the Postumia.

Tortonas diocese is one of the oldest in the world. According to tradition, was the first bishop of the holy Marziano who was crucified according to different sources under Trajan 117 or 120 under Hadrian as a Christian martyr. Although the historical details of the sacred Marziano are insufficient and fragmentary, there was a Christian community probably already in the 2nd century.

Today Tortona is an industrial and commercial city, a transportation hub to which a scientific and technological park and the container interim storage of Rivalta Scrivia belong.

Attractions

Tourist interesting buildings are: the church of Santa Maria Canale from the 11th century, the cathedral from the 16th century, and the Bishop's Palace, the Theatre (1842 ), the San Giacomo church from the 17th century, the Capuchin church, the tower of the castle, the Via Emilia and the old city center with the Palazzo Guidobono. South of Tortona is the Cistercian monastery built in 1180 Rivalta Scrivia.

Twinning

Cities partners are Privas in France and Jiangyin in China. The partnership with Weilburg, Germany was completed in August 2008, which was with Zevenaar in the Netherlands have already been completed before.

The geological stage of the Tortonian ( Miocene, Neogene ) was named after the city of Tortona.
