The area was then a relatively barren and poorly accessible raised bog and offered only a meager livelihood. It was not until about 100 years later, the Moor are systematically drained by the completion of the north-south channel, and abgetorft large area. Thus, the conditions of life improved significantly. Up to 3,000 workers - especially seasonal workers and border crossers - found employment here in the oldest industry of the community. The Eduard Schöningh brothers and the publisher founder Ferdinand Schöningh are the founders of the district Schöninghsdorf.

In the 1950s, the economic boom began with the development of oil resources and through a plastic pipe manufacturing company. Oil production coined a long time due to its numerous oil producing fields with their transfer pumps, also called " head leakage ," the village. Until mid-1990, crude oil production was, along with the plastics industry, the major employer in Twist. From this point, the oil production was by the then oil prices as no longer profitable, which is why many funding sources have been partially decommissioned. By the later rise in oil prices, the oil industry here is still present, but not more important than employers.

In 1986, the congregation celebrated its 200th anniversary with a parade with many floats and marchers. The motives of the individual floats and marchers had reference to the history of the community or made according to the townscape. So was on a float, a replica of the Church of St. George.

Demographics

Origin of the name

It was long thought that the name Twist was due to disagreement over the borders with the Netherlands. Therefore, people spoke of Twist Rich, what in Low German as much as was disputed border or twist region, said Twist armed means.

Recent studies of the names researcher Jürgen Udolph showed that Twist rather from Twistel (meaning, Zwiesel, 'also, Zweiung ' something that makes a fork) is derived. Zwisila means forked branch. The Zweiung / split is also evident in Middle Low German twist, so zwist. [ This includes twistelik ( amongst themselves ), twist ( at variance, be armed ) and twister total ( discord, strife ). ] Udolph pulled for further clarification approach also from the Germanic emerged languages: Old English twisla means river division, Norwegian kvisl means river division, Bayou; Old Norse kvistr means branch. The basic meaning of twist can therefore only be: Shared settlement; lying at a bifurcation site.

Pronunciation of the borough's name

A linguistic feature is that twist is not pronounced like the dance, but with a stretched "i ", ie as " Twiest ". Furthermore, it is - at least partly - also used the phrase " on the Twist " instead of " Twist ". Local residents say, therefore, that " the Twist" is not " from Twist".
