Volokolamsky District

The Wolokolamski rayon (Russian Волоколамский район ) is a raion in Moscow Oblast in Russia.

Geography

The Rajon bordered on the northeast by the Klinski rayon, on the east by the Rajons Istrinski and Russki, rayon in the south to the Moschaiski, rajon to the Shakhovskoi in the west and rayon in the north- west by the Lotoschinski. Administrative center is the city of Rajons Volokolamsk.

The climate is temperate continental. The most important rivers of Rajons are the Rusa and the Lama.

Population and administrative divisions

The Rajon has 53.244 inhabitants, of which 26,538 in cities ( Volokolamsk and the urban-type settlement Sytschowo, 2010). In Rajon there are two urban and six rural municipalities with a total 267 villages.

History

The Rajon Volokolamsk was founded in 1929.

Economy

Main industries of Rajons are agriculture, building materials industry and the textile industry.

Traffic

By Rajon the railway line from Moscow to Riga and her following highway M9 Baltija run (also European Route 22). The transport within the Rajons is ensured mainly by local bus services.
