Krasnoznamensk, Moscow Oblast

Krasnoznamensk (Russian Краснознаменск ) is a closed town in Rajon Odintsovo in Moscow Oblast, Russia. It is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Moscow and has 36 103 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). Neighboring towns are Golizyno and Aprelewka, the raion center Odintsovo is around 30 km away.

Description

The town was founded in 1951 as a workers' settlement and military base, has since 1981, city status and was, until 1994, when it received its present name (which literally means " Rotbannerstadt " means ), known as Golizyno -2.

The city hosts the Titov - ground station of the Russian Space Forces, which has been symbolized in the city arms. Also, here is the test center for Russian space systems. Due to the strategic importance of these objects Krasnoznamensk has since obtaining the city rights the status of a closed city and can be accessed by non-locals still only with special permission.

Near the city of the Russian highway M1 and the parallel railway line Moscow - Smolensk -Minsk runs (nearest train station is the breakpoint Schaworonki ).
