Voskresensk, Moscow Oblast

Woskressensk (Russian Воскресенск ) is a city in Russia. It is the administrative center of the Rajons Woskressensk in the Moscow Oblast and has 91 464 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Woskressensk is located on the Moskva River, about 90 km southeast of Moscow. The closest cities, each with around 25 kilometers Egoryevsk and Kolomna.

The place is characterized by an unusual urban structure. Industrial areas, tributaries of the Moskva River and through underground pipes divide the residential areas in six separate segregated parts. The city extends over a length of 16 km along the Moskva River and the railway line Moscow - Ryazan.

History

Woskressensk originated as a settlement on a 1862 station opened the newly built railway line from Moscow to Ryazan. This station was, after the nearby village Woskressenskoje ( Воскресенское ) Woskressenskaja ( Воскресенская ) called. 1934, the resulting settlement at the station the name Woskressensk, 1938 City status.

Economy

Today Woskressensk is an important industrial and agricultural site. In the city there are, among others, fertilizer, building materials and textile factories, as well as a large bread factory.

Sports

With the professional hockey club Chimik Woskressensk and a new Ice Arena, the city is particularly well known for this sport. Also produced several famous hockey player from Woskressensk:
