Wide Bay - Burnett is a region in Queensland, Australia, located north of Brisbane and extends between the towns of Caloundra and Gladstone. The main industries in the region are forestry, sugar cane cultivation, agriculture and tourism.

Geography

The region stretches over 48,488 km ² with different landscapes, such as the Great Barrier Reef, wetlands in the Great Sandy Strait, Fraser Iceland, Bunya Mountains, Cania Gorge and a rural hinterland. The largest sand island in the world, Fraser Iceland, attracts numerous tourists.

Population

It is a powerful growing region, which is concentrated along the coastline and on average grew in the last 20 years in the Australian comparison. More than 80 % of the region's population lives in the five centers of Bundaberg, Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Gympie and Kingaroy. 2009, the population was 287 425 people, more than two thirds of them lived around Bundaberg and the Fraser Coast. It is expected to grow to 2031 by 150,000 to 430,000 people.

For continuous growth in 2011 plans were developed, the Wide Bay - Bernett Regional Plan and Wide Bay Burnett State Planning Regulatory Provisions 2011.

The largest cities of the region are Bundaberg, Gympie, Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

More cities will be Bargara Biggenden, Blackbutt, Burnett Heads, Childers, Eidsvold, Gayndah, Gin Gin, Howard, Imbil, Kilkivan, Monto, Mundubbera, Murgon, Nanango, Tin Can Bay and Wondai.

Education and infrastructure

In the region there are three universities, Central Queensland University, University of Southern Queensland and the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE.

There are three airports: Hervey Bay, Bundaberg and Maryborough.

The Bruce Highway links the region to Brisbane, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns, during the Burnett Highway and Isis Highway forms part of the domestic transport corridor to Toowoomba in the central New South Wales.

Queensland Rail operates with an express train, the Tilt Train, the towns of Gympie, Maryborough and Bundaberg.
