William Ellison-Macartney

William Grey Ellison - Macartney ( born June 7, 1852 in Dublin, Ireland, † December 4, 1924 in London) was a British politician and Governor of Tasmania and Western Australia.

Life

William was born as the son of John William Ellison, a Conservative member of the British House of Commons. Due to an inheritance from his wife's family took Williams father in 1859 the double name Ellison Macartney on. William went to Exeter College, Oxford, where he studied law and history. In 1878 he was admitted to the bar. He supported the affiliation of Ireland to the UK and was a member of the Orange Order.

Ellison - Macartney has been elected in the general election in 1885 and retired as a conservative member in the House of Commons. In 1886 he was involved in the founding of the Irish Unionist Party, for which he acted as Whip in the subsequent period. In 1890 he was appointed Secretary of the Admiralty, a then important post in the British government appointed. The post he had to leave again in 1900 following a government reshuffle, but was compensated with a membership in the Privy Council. In 1897 he married Ettie Scott Myers, a sister of polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott, the Ellison - Macartney later supported again and again; still on his expedition to the South Pole called Scott him in letters as " brick" ( great guy ).

In December 1912 Ellison Macartney was appointed governor of Tasmania. Due to its unique pro-British attitude and the rejection of the Home Rule met his appointment in Tasmania on certain mistrust. During his tenure, he spoke occasionally toxic about conditions in Tasmania. As he wrote in 1915 about the budget discussions that the deputies were apparently concerned incapable of any objective criticism and only to their well-paid parliamentary seats.

In 1917, he was after his time in Tasmania, as well as his predecessor Harry Barron, appointed Governor of Western Australia. As in Tasmania, he worked there as a Freemason and was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Perth.

1920 Ellison Macartney returned back to England, where he died on December 4, 1924 in Chelsea, London.
