Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott, BWV 139

Blessed is the man to his God ( BWV 139 ) is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach. He composed the chorale cantata in Leipzig in 1724 for the 23th Sunday after Trinity and led them on 12 November 1724 on. It is based on the hymn by Johann Christoph Rube (1692 ).

History and words

Bach composed the cantata in 1724, his second year in Leipzig for the 23th Sunday after Trinity. The prescribed readings were Phil 3:17-21 LUT, "Our conversation is in heaven ," and Matthew 22.15-22 LUT, the fishing question of the tribute money which Jesus answered: " Render unto Caesar ... ". The cantata is based on the same hymn in five stanzas of Johann Christoph Rube (1692 ). It is " God, Deal with me according to thy goodness " sung to the tune of Johann Hermann Schein ( 1628). An unknown librettist retained the first and last verse in the text as in sentences 1 and 6 of the cantata and worked the inner verses to an alternating sequence of arias and recitatives. From verse 2, he developed set 2, set 3, he wrote again, with reference to the Gospel, from the verses 3 and 4, he led the sets 4 and 5 from. According to Hans -Joachim Schulze, it could be, for the poet to Andreas Stöbel, a former co- president of the St. Thomas School, who possessed the necessary theological knowledge.

Bach led the cantata for the first time on 12 November 1724, further performances followed 1732-35 and between 1744 and 47 the voice of a violin obbligato exists for the second set, but the voice of a second Obligat instrument is missing, the other a violin could have been or oboe d' amore.

Scoring and structure

The cantata is chamber music filled with four soloists, soprano, alto, tenor and bass, four-part choir, two oboes d' amore, two violins, viola and basso continuo.

Music

The opening chorus is a chorale fantasy, the instruments play independent concert chamber music, the soprano sings the melody as a cantus firmus, the lower voices interpret the text, which deals with the childlike trust of believers in the first section, the second " all hell ", which he " probably hilarious " resists, the third section. The key is E major, Bach 's time a key rarely used.

In the Tenor Aria the subject appears on the words "God is my friend" again and again instrumental. In Theorem 4, a bass aria with solo violin and oboes d'amore unison Bach seamlessly switches from loud, double -dash music for peaceful sounds in 6/8-measure on the text " But suddenly appeareth the helping hand ". The final chorale is a simple four-part set.
