The Yamaha XJ 600 S / N Diversion is a motorcycle model of the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha from the XJ series. The U.S. and Australian trade name is Seca II

The bike was offered in different versions:

  • Sport Tourer (S ) with half cup 1991-2003 ( XJ 600 S " Diversion " )
  • Naked Bike (N) without cladding 1993-2003 ( XJ 600 N)

Through both sporting properties as well as large practicality and because of the low price, this bike is spread still numerous today. Especially the good controllability makes it an ideal motorcycle for driving schools and learner drivers.

General

The XJ 600 S " Diversion " was constructed from scratch and does not have much in common with the XJ600. 61 bhp, but with only a front disc brake instead of the double disc of the XJ600, and a 38 mm thick fork. Some users reported at the beginning of problems with the fuel tap and the electrical system. 1993 (not " Diversion " ) marketed as the sister XJ 600 N as undisguised model on the market.

As part of the facelift in 1994 and 1996 some problem areas have been eliminated. Similarly, the panel and the rear experienced changes, so you should be careful, for example, with replacement shells or luggage carrier systems - from 1996, the fit of such parts for the old models can not be guaranteed.

With the model 4LX came the mid-1990s a XJ 600 on the market, which was throttled at the factory to 34 hp and therefore suitable for beginners driver's license; after previous models from 50 hp had. The last and most developed model is the RJ01 of the model year 1998. Here was a more stable fork ( 41 mm ) and front reinstated the second disc brake.

As of 2003, the XJ 600 then ran out due to the stricter emission limits without Yamaha presented a direct successor. The FZ6 Fazer has a sportier profile (including 98 hp engine ), while the Suzuki Bandit 600 for a long time dominated the field in the 600 Tourer.

Weaknesses

Typical weaknesses has the whole XJ series is not actually, as their is a sophisticated and uncomplicated technology based. Both XJ 600 can possibly say of a certain inclination to the handlebar flutter. As a rule, however, will only notice this if, for example tires were " square" driven by inattention while air pressure or when was sloppy when installing the steering head bearing. Also an error when installing the rocker or not exactly flush built rear impacts in this way.

The carburetor should be synchronized from time to time and also the valve clearance checked regularly, because negligence of the user this can sometimes quite significantly much fuel in the air. Who is technically not very talented person can thereby manage themselves.

In the early series ( beginning 1990) occur due to the vacuum carburetor, Anstartprobleme on when the motorcycle is a few days or the outside temperature is low. Short-term remedy is the fuel cock to " pri" to make to pull the "choke " and a few minutes to wait. Then the starter in bursts at intervals of 1 second more times. Permanent remedy a modification kit for the carburetor (Service Tip No. 62KD 27/94 and 10KD 03/ 94 of 1994) for the subsequent conversion of Yamaha, consisting of an S-shaped piece of hose and 4 Chokedüsen size 52.5 or a conversion to an electric fuel pump.

Opportunities for improvement

As with all " bread and butter " machines can optimize the initial suspension properties.

Suspension

The suspension of the old XJ 600 series is almost better than the new series. This is due to the different concepts.

The 51J was to be a super athlete to the drawing board. However, it was seen more as an athlete / sport touring and buy accordingly. Unlike many other motorcycles of the 80's, the chassis of the 51J in harmony with the engine performance. However, the landing gear is second choice by today's standards.

The diversion, however, had been planned from the beginning as a touring machine and was therefore equipped with suitable, but not outstanding spring elements. This manifests itself especially in the spongy to fork suspension and the lack of torsional stiffness of the models before 1998.

In both cases, it may be easier conversion to progressive fork springs. Thus, the response is not only direct, which makes for more feedback from the road surface to the driver, prevents in connection with the conversion to tougher fork oil ( 15s instead of 10s viscosity) a breakdown of the fork it.

In the models, the XJ 600 S / N prior to 1998, you should also consider installing a fork brace into consideration, as it can improve only sufficient torsional stiffness of the fork very - especially when heavy braking is a clear gain in safety.

The strut can also be exchanged for higher-quality accessories, but mostly here is the improvement in the behavior not the very high cost (about 500 euros ) worth.

Brake system

No longer the single disc models before 1998 is sufficient, but: In the XJ 600 S / N here the usual distinguishing criterion applies. The dual disc brake of the 1998 -built motorcycles not only ensures better braking performance, it also prevents the slight distortion of the fork, which the old models 1991-1997 have yet.

As a weak point of your brake system and the rubber lines are often seen. These ensure, as with all cars and motorcycles with rubber brake lines, for a softer pressure point, which can be improved by upgrading to stainless steel brake lines.

Tyres

The factory tires and tire accessories later ( such as Michelin Macadam ) are now out of date. Significant advances in tire development are given clues of many users by the following conversions:

The first election under the tire is for most XJ- driver of the BT 45 " Battlax " Bridgestone dar. Two mixtures, hard in the middle, soft on the flanks, reached the manufacturer for a high performance, 8000-15000 kilometers the front tire and 4.000km - 10.000km at the rear tires ( depending on driving style ), on the other hand already builds the tires even at low operating temperature high adhesive forces, even when wet. If you keep constant the prescribed air pressure, it also reduces the latent tendency to link flapping all XJ -600 models.

Another alternative is the LaserTec Metzeler. The ride quality on average not quite reach the values of the BT 45, but he is also seen as a total USEFULLY tires.
