The 13th ceremony of the Independent Spirit Awards took place on 21 March 1998.
Summary
The clear winner in the films was Robert Duvall's religion satire Apostle! ( The Apostle ), which won three awards, one for best film, best director and best actor. The latter two went there to Duvall Duvall itself known competitors were Kevin Smith's comedy Chasing Amy, who won two awards, and Paul Thomas Anderson's first feature film Last Exit Reno ( Sydney ), who received five nominations, but no price. Atom Egoyan won the award for best foreign film of prominent competition ( for the second time Wong Kar- Wai and for the first time Emir Kusturica ).
