The third award of the Independent Spirit Awards took place in 1988.
Summary
Best Picture was The River's Edge ( River's Edge ) against strong competition from The Big Easy and Matewan. John Huston's last film The Dead - The Dead ( The Dead ) was not nominated for Best Picture, but won the awards for best director and best supporting actress. John Sayles ' Matewan was nominated five times, but won "only" the price for the best camera for the veterans Haskell Wexler. The Big Easy starring Dennis Quaid won the award for Best Actor, among other things, against the second time nominated James Woods. Sally Kirkland sat down with Anna as best actress against two actresses Legends by Joanne Woodward and Lillian Gish. Best debut film was the dance classic film Dirty Dancing, Best Foreign Film Lasse Hallström's My Life as a Dog ( Mitt liv som dog ), who won against stiff competition from John Boorman, the nominees for the third time Stephen Frears and Louis Malle.
