The 17th ceremony of the Independent Spirit Awards took place on 23 March 2002.
Summary
Christopher Nolan's thriller Memento was psychedelic best film and still won three more awards. The film had strong competition: In the Bedroom ( three awards ), Ghost World ( two awards, including the second for Steve Buscemi ), LIE (one award and six nominations ), Hedwig and the Angry Inch ( five nominations ) and Donnie Darko ( three nominations ). Surprisingly few nominations Marc Forster's Monster's Ball, Richard Linklater's Waking Life and David Lynch's Mulholland received Dr. Jean-Pierre Jeunet won with The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie (Le fabuleux destin d' Amélie Poulain ) the price -. Best foreign film against strong competition by Jonathan Glazer and Alejandro González Iñárritu.
