The second presentation of the Independent Spirit Awards took place in 1987.
Summary
Oliver Stone won two awards that night (director and writer) for Platoon and entered in both categories also against himself to ( Salvador ). Platoon was the big winner with four awards (film, director, screenplay, camera), at the Oscars, there were also four trophies. David Lynch's Blue Velvet was able to prevail despite six nominations only in the best actress ( Isabella Rossellini ). ( Rossellini won against Laura Dern, who was nominated for the second year in a row. ) Jim Jarmusch's Down by Law and Rob Reiner's Stand by Me could not win a single price. Oliver Stone's second film in the race, Salvador, won the award for best actor ( James Woods ). The then- newcomer Spike Lee won with Nola Darling (She's Gotta Have It) the prize for the best debut film from Talking Heads singer David Byrne, who was nominated for his only previous feature film True Stories. Doris Dorries comedy Men was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, but lost to James Ivory E. M. Forster adaptation Room with a View (A Room with a View ).
