9th Independent Spirit Awards

The ninth presentation of the Independent Spirit Awards took place on 19 March 1994.

Summary

Like last year, won the work of Robert Altman the prize for the best film. Short Cuts have also received prices for directing and screenplay so that Altman was equal to twice awarded. Ang Lee's The Wedding Banquet ( Hsi yen ) was Altman's fiercest competitor: The film was nominated for six prizes, but remained unprämiert. Something similar happened to Victor Nuñez 'Ruby in Paradise: Six times nominated, the film won only one award. Jane Campion was the third time the award for best foreign film ( with the piano ), Mike Leigh again belonged to the losers, as Zhang Yimou. Robert Rodriguez's low-budget surprise hit El Mariachi won the award for the best debut film and as pointed John Turturro's directorial debut, Mac and Menace II Society to the places.
