6th Independent Spirit Awards
The sixth award of the Independent Spirit Awards took place in 1991.
Summary
Best Picture was The Grifters ( The Grifters ) of the already nominated four times for the best foreign film Stephen Frears. Frears himself was not nominated, his producers ( including Martin Scorsese ) received the award. Grifters ( The Grifters ) came up just one more nomination: Anjelica Huston was voted best actress ( Joanne Woodward lost again ) and so won her second Independent Spirit Award. The winning film was Charles Burnett's Angry sleep ( To Sleep with Anger ), which was nominated seven times and won four awards. John McNaughton disturbing film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was nominated for six awards, but received not a single. David Lynch's Wild at Heart won the Cinematography Award and otherwise only a nomination for Willem Dafoe as Best Supporting Actor, his second. Jane Campion won the award for best foreign film against Peter Greenaway, who was nominated for The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover ( The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover ).
