The 16th ceremony of the Independent Spirit Awards took place on March 24, 2001 and was hosted by John Waters.
Summary
After Ang Lee with two films ( The Wedding Banquet ( Hsi yen ) and Eat Drink Man Woman ( Yin shi nan nu) ) had unsuccessfully nominated, he won with Tiger, Hidden Dragon ( Wo hu cang long) prices - the best film and the best Director. Darren Aronofsky's drug drama Requiem for a Dream received two awards and three nominations, Kenneth Lonergan's You Can Count on Me also. Willem Dafoe won with his third nomination his first Independent Spirit Award. Lars von Trier, nominated for the second year in a row, won the prize - the best foreign film for Dancer in the Dark. Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai was indeed nominated for best film, but received no further nomination.
