- On the night of 8 to 9 June, the falls since 1860 existing theater at the Franz - Josef - Kai in Vienna in a fire. Director Karl Treumann thereupon to the plan of its own theater building and takes over on August 19, again the Directorate of Carl theater.
- Emperor Franz Joseph I. leaves the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna in the area of Vienna's Ringstrasse, free of charge, an area for the construction of a concert hall. With the design of the architect Theophil Hansen is appointed.

- The Bohemian composer Bedrich Smetana completed the opera began last year, the Brandenburger in Bohemia. The premiere takes place, however, until the year 1866.
