The 1997/98 season was the 23rd season of Division 1 as the second highest Swedish hockey league.

Mode

The league was divided into the first round in four groups. The top two teams in each group qualified for the Allsvenskan, while the remaining teams had to compete in a qualifying round. For the qualifying round, the teams were given according to their main round placement between zero and seven bonus points. The top two finishers of each qualifying round qualified for the playoffs. The 14 weakest teams in the qualifying round had to play in the relegation to avoid relegation to Division 2.

Of the eight teams in the Allsvenskan, the top two teams qualified for the Kvalserien. The teams ranked three to six of the Allsvenskan qualified for the second playoff round. The two playoff winner and the two Allsvenskan winners met in the Kvalserien each other together with the two last placed the Elitserien to rise or relegation, the two winners were allowed to compete in the following season in the Elitserien.

For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
