Background
Dispute over the discharge
The implementation of this race was partially strongly criticized and the race weekend was accompanied by protests against the host, as the unrest in Bahrain, due to which the Grand Prix was canceled last year, still persisted. It was also during the race weekend clashes between security forces and protesters. On April 21, 2012, a dead man was found after fresh riots; the circumstances of his death are still unclear.
A re cancellation of the event was required, inter alia, by numerous human rights organizations and opposition. A few days before the race but whose discharge was definitively confirmed.
FIA president Jean Todt criticized the media for their one-sided reporting in the Grand Prix. He stated that protests normal occurrences in a democracy are and vorkämen anywhere in the world. He believes that only a minority against the current rulers aufbegehre.

The Bahrain Grand Prix returned in 2012 in the racing calendar back. In 2011, he was postponed due to political unrest. After the last Grand Prix of Bahrain had taken place in 2010 on the track variant of the Endurance Circuit Bahrain International Circuit, this year the variant Grand Prix Circuit was again used.

Training
In the first free practice Hamilton posted the fastest lap in front of Sebastian Vettel and Paul di Resta. Valtteri Bottas took this training to Williams by Bruno Senna. Nico Rosberg collided in this training at a speed of about 200 km / h with a bird. His helmet remained undamaged and Rosberg retired to no injuries. In the second free practice session Rosberg was the fastest rider in front of Mark Webber and Vettel. Force India decided to skip the workout and to leave the track early. Vettel finished second ahead of Webber.
Qualifying
In the first phase of qualifying Sergio Pérez scored the fastest lap. The HRT and Marussia pilots and Vitaly Petrov, Jean- Éric Vergne and Schumacher dropped out. Schumacher had problems with the Drag Reduction System ( DRS). In the second section of Hamilton was the fastest pilot. The Williams driver and Heikki Kovalainen, Massa, Nico Hulkenberg, Kamui Kobayashi and Kimi Raikkonen retired from. This eight teams reached the last segment. This eventually drove Vettel set the fastest time and scored his first pole position of the 2012 season against Hamilton and his team-mate Webber.

Race
Vettel kept at startup the lead ahead of Hamilton and Webber. Romain Grosjean improved to fourth, Alonso fifth. On the sixth button was before Raikkonen and Massa, who had a good start. First, he overtook Webber, then Hamilton.
In the seventh round, the phase of the first pit stops began. Hamilton had problems with his pit stop and fell behind Webber and Alonso, who were at the same time in the pits, back. He also was behind Rosberg, but he overtook him with a hard maneuvers. While Hamilton's team-mate Button overtook Alonso, Vettel went into the pits and handed the lead to di Resta, who thus led a Formula 1 race for the first time. However, Vettel overtook him shortly afterwards.
After the first pit stop phase Vettel led by a margin of about five seconds ahead of Grosjean. Behind it was Raikkonen who used the softer tire compound in contrast to the two leading pilots. He took on Grosjean and finally drove past his teammate.
Shortly after, the phase of the second pit stops began. Again changed the first three pilots on different mixtures. Grosjean and Raikkonen chose the harder, Vettel for the softer version. At Hamilton, the stop was again not optimal. In the meantime, Charles Pic and Maldonado were excreted with technical problems.
While Massa on his teammate Alonso exerted pressure, Raikkonen taking at the top on Vettel. Using the Drag Reduction System, he managed to get closer to Vettel. In the 36th round, he tried on the start -finish straight overtaking, but withdrew. A few laps later both pilots came to their final pit stop. This left before Vettel Raikkonen. Short term lead was Grosjean, who drove his first lead lap in Formula 1.
Vettel built after the pit stop the lead to Raikkonen made . Grosjean was about ten seconds behind Vettel. Shortly before the end of the race Button suffered a puncture that forced him to another pit stop. The goal, he still did not reach, because he gave up shortly afterwards with another technical problem. He was, however, just like Senna, who turned out just before end of the race, scored.
Vettel finally won his first Formula 1 Grand Prix of the season in front of Raikkonen and Grosjean. It was Räikkönen's first podium placing after his return to Formula 1 for Grosjean it was the first podium placement at all. Webber was fourth, Rosberg fifth.
Di Resta continued the only driver on a two-stop strategy, reaching the sixth. The remaining points went to Alonso, Hamilton, Massa and Schumacher. It was Massa's first points of the season.
In the drivers' world championship Vettel took the lead from Hamilton, who fell back to second place ahead of Webber. In the constructors Red Bull took over the top spot from McLaren who were in second place. Lotus improved to third place.
