The Hungarian Grand Prix 2012 took place on 29 July at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród and was the eleventh round of the Formula 1 season in 2012.

Background

After the Grand Prix of Germany Fernando Alonso led the drivers' championship with 34 points ahead of Mark Webber and 44 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel. In the Constructors' Championship, Red Bull -Renault led with 53 points ahead of Ferrari and 70 points ahead of McLaren - Mercedes.

At the Hungarian Grand Prix put Pirelli riders the tire compounds P Zero medium ( white) and P Zero soft (yellow), as well as for wet conditions Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue ) are available.

With Michael Schumacher ( four times ), Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton (twice), Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Heikki Kovalainen and Webber ( once each ) were seven former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of his teammate Button and Alonso. Qualifying

Race

The start of the Hungarian Grand Prix had to first be canceled and another lap to be performed. The reason for the take-off was that Schumacher had taken the wrong starting position. Instead of driving to the 17th position, Schumacher drove to the 19th position. He set out from his engine, as he thought that for this case a five-minute break was provided. However, this scheme only applied to 2006. Schumacher was pushed into the pit lane and took up the race from there.

At the start Hamilton got away well and kept the lead safely. Grosjean was attacked by Vettel and maintained his position. Vettel lost it momentum. This enabled button outside to ride in the second curve to pass Vettel on the third position. Also behind, there were shifts. Alonso went on past Raikkonen on the fifth place. In the initial phase Schumacher went for a tire change to the box. However, he was driving too fast and immediately got a drive through penalty. In the initial phase, the pilots were trying to conserve their tires.

Hamilton and Grosjean dropped off at the top. Grosjean had a few seconds behind Hamilton. Button came in third place under pressure from Vettel. In lap 15 Button was the first driver out of the top group that went to the box. He moved from the softer to the harder tire compound. Three laps later, Vettel and Alonso follow. While Alonso also switched to the harder tires, Vettel stayed on the softer compound. Button remained ahead of Vettel, Alonso fell behind Sergio Pérez, who had not yet stopped, back and therefore was not able to take advantage of fresh tires. Hamilton went on Grosjean to the box and went after the meantime Leading Raikkonen had stopped again in the lead. Hamilton moved to the harder compound, the Lotus pilots remained on the softer tire compound. Raikkonen passed through the stop at Alonso.

Alonso and Räikkönen stayed out of the top group for more on the track and took the harder tire compound with. In the World Cup Alonso enlarged the gap on second-placed Webber. Vettel, Hamilton and Raikkonen in the squares behind caught up. In the constructors Red Bull remained in the lead. Ferrari fell back from second to fourth place. McLaren was new before Lotus on the second place.
