Geography

Geographical Location

Barum, a village surrounded by the Lüneburg Elbmarsch, is centrally located to the towns of Lüneburg ( about 13 miles), Winsen ( about 16 miles), Lauenburg ( about 18 km) and Geesthacht ( about 15 miles) as well as to Hamburg ( about 40 km). Until the same is about 6 km. The village is crossed by the river Neetze, the north of the village lake-like widening and therefore Barumer lake is called. From the Neetze the end of the 19th century branches built Neetzekanal.

The municipality consists of the villages Barum Barum, Horburg and St. Dionys.

History

Incorporations

On March 1, 1974, the municipalities Horburg and St. Dionysius were incorporated at the local government reform in Lower Saxony.

The municipality is part of the Barum Parliament Constituency 49 Lüneburg and the Bundestag constituency 38 Lüchow -Dannenberg, Lüneburg.

Argent, a blue wave Göpel right, a blue Mühleisen, left the fed turned crook of a bishop blue bar and down a leafy, blue cattail. The wave Göpel has the many watercourses through which run through the municipality and simultaneously shows that the community is made up of three parts. The Mühleisen represents the district Barum, the crozier of St. Dionysius, the cattail for Horburg.

Place names

The old names were 1290 in Berne, 1304 in Barem, 1305 Barme, 1319 in villa Barme, 1344 uilla Barem, 1348 to / van Barum, 1354 Barem, 1366 van Barum, 1384 to Barem. The Low German dialect dictionaries recorded under barme, berm several interpretations, such as grave edge, river dike, embankment, step on the dike, the sole "of the foot of the dike ."
