Berkovići

Berkovici ( Serbian Cyrillic Берковићи ) is a village and a municipality in the south of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It belongs to the part of the country and Herzegovina heard since the war in Bosnia Republika Srpska.

Geography

The mountainous municipality is crossed by the Bregava as the largest river.

The cave Ratkovača, which was found by locals, is examined by archaeologists. The underground passages, halls, small lakes and jewelry that was found in the cave suggests that the cave was inhabited by indigenous peoples.

Immediately there is a small waterfall, which springs from the river Opačica next to the cave. The height of the waterfall is approximately 150 meters. Within the community of other caves were discovered, such as in the Hatelji settlement that Sunićka cave that lists a length of 300 m.

On the border with the municipality of Stolac gravel and feathers were found from the limestone from the river Bregava. The depth was located 120 meters.

Because of the numerous discovery of the caves, more and more tourists visit the church.

History

The community was created with the Dayton Agreement in 1995. That part of the municipality of Stolac, which was controlled by the forces of the Republika Srpska, was split off and the municipality Berkovici.

Population

The majority of the population in the municipality are Serbs.

In the year 1991 3.510 people lived in today's municipal area, which is 2,111 as Serbs ( 60.14 %), 715 as Bosniaks ( 20.37 %), 646 as Croats ( 18.40 %) and 38 designated as members of other groups. In contrast, the Serbs were in the rest of the municipality of Stolac in the minority.

The place Berkovici himself had 159 inhabitants, of whom 155 were Serbs. In eight out of 18 districts of the church today however, there was a Bosniak, Croat or Bosniak- Croat majority.

Today the community has about 2,200 inhabitants.

The community Berkovici divided into the following communities:

Berkovici, Bitunja, Brštanik, Burmazi, Dabrica, Thu, Hatelji, Hodovo, Hrgud, Ljubljenica, Ljuti Do, Meca, Poplat, Predolje, Strupići, Selista, Suzina, Šćepan Krst, Trusina and Žegulja.
