Bramble Cay

Bramble Cay, also Naizab Kaur, Massaramcoer or Baramaki called, is located at the northeast corner of the Torres Strait Islands ( Queensland), while on the north- western end of the Great Barrier Reef and has the most northern point of Australia on.

The sandy island stretches 425 meters east-west and 240 meters wide, with an area of ​​four hectares. The surrounding coral reef extends east over an area of 1.92 km ² especially in the east of the island, to about 1300 meters. Approximately half of the area inside is covered with grass. Bramble Cay Light, a lighthouse, located on the island. The island is a breeding place of the green turtle. The sea is rich in algae, so fish like Unicornfish, wrasse and trumpet fish in the environment occur.

About five kilometers southwest are the only one meter from the water towering Black Rocks, also called Rebes that rise a few feet above the water. Three kilometers to the northeast is on different cards, Nautilus Reef drawn, the existence of which, however, is questionable.

Bramble Cay and the neighboring reefs and rocks are separated to the south by the Bligh Channel ( Bligh Entrance) from the other islands and reefs. In the north separates the Great North East Channel of the island Parama Iceland off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

Administratively, Bramble Cay is part of the Torres Shire, especially for the region of the Eastern Islands. Traditionally, Bramble Cay is owned by the residents of Darnley Iceland, the nearest island 45 km south-southwest. The Darnley Islanders gather to Bramble Cay during the breeding season turtles and bird eggs, and allow this also inhabitants of the neighboring islands of the Eastern Islands, Iceland Stephens and Murray Iceland. The owners of Darnley Iceland and thus Bramble Cay are Meuram, one of the eight strains of Murray Iceland.

The closest island is uninhabited Underdown Islet some 40 kilometers südlich.Parama Iceland, which already belongs to Papua New Guinea, located 48 km WNW. The town of Daru, the capital of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea is located about 70 kilometers west of Bramble Cay.
