List of Torres Strait Islands

The Torres Strait Islands are a group of 274 small islands in the sea passage ( Torres Strait ) between the northern tip of Australia, Cape York and Papua New Guinea.

The vast number of islands belongs geopolitically to the Australian state of Queensland.

The islands along the south coast of Papua New Guinea are part of the Western Province. The most important of these islands is Daru Iceland, on which is located the eponymous capital of the Western Province of Papua New Guinea.

Only 21 of 270 Torres Strait Islands are inhabited, of which 19 Australian islands and the adjacent Islands, Papua New Guinea Daru and Parama. The 19 inhabited islands correspond to 18 Australian communities. A community corresponds to an inhabited island, with two exceptions:

  • Moa Iceland is divided into two communities ( Kubin and St Pauls )
  • Prince of Wales Iceland, Iceland Friday and Pack Iceland together form the community Murralag

Named after weekdays islands Wednesday Iceland ( east of it the two little Tuesday Islets ), Thursday Iceland and Friday Iceland received its western name of William Bligh, who crossed in the first week of June 1789 after the mutiny on the Bounty, the Torres Strait west ( Kupang ) while this individual larger islands on the respective days of the week came ( Tuesday, June 2 to Friday, June 5, 1789 ). Based on the location of these islands can be traced the route of Bligh's boat. The remaining days of the week have not designated islands after them because Bligh had not yet reached the Torres Strait Islands on Monday and had passed through on Saturday it already.

In the following incomplete table shows the main islands of the Torres Strait Islands are listed.
