Turtle Head Island

Turtle Head Iceland is an Australian island in the far south of the archipelago of the Torres Strait Islands. It is located directly off the east coast of Cape York Peninsula in the Newcastle Bay at the mouth of Escape River. 1.3 km west of Turtlehead are Trochus Iceland, 3.5 km north the islands Turtle and Brewis Iceland.

The shape of the densely forested island is somewhat reminiscent of a turtle head (English Turtlehead ). On Turtle Head there are smaller brackish water lakes. During the northwestern part of the island is uninhabited, located on the southwest coast of the small settlement Ok Village with boat dock and on the southeast coast of a takeoff and landing strip for small aircraft ( 10 ° 57 ' 18 "S, 142 ° 42 ' 11 " E ).

Administratively counts Turtle Head Iceland to the Inner Islands, an island region in the municipality of Torres Shire of Queensland.

Captain William Bligh passed the island on Wednesday, June 3, 1789 during his trip to Kupang in the dinghy the Bounty.
