Chebarkul

Chebarkul (Russian Чебаркуль ) is a city in Chelyabinsk Oblast (Russia) with 42 844 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Southern Urals about 80 km west of Chelyabinsk Oblasthauptstadt on the same lake.

Chebarkul the Oblast is administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

The city lies on the southern branch of the Trans-Siberian Railway Moscow - Samara Chelyabinsk - Omsk ( 2024 line kilometers from Moscow). A few kilometers south of the city runs the M5 highway Moscow - Chelyabinsk.

History

Chebarkul was created in 1736 as a fortress near the border between Russian and bashkir area. The name was derived from the Bashkir ( Sibar kul ) or Tartar ( tschybar kul ) words for beautiful and colorful lake. The location was the transit point for food deliveries to the Cossack troops in the southern Urals and later was itself a Kosakenstaniza. On October 25, 1951 Chebarkul received city rights.

A part of the meteor near Chelyabinsk February 15, 2013 by in the form of a meteorite struck the ice of Lake Chebarkul and left in a hole six meters in diameter.

Culture and sights

The city has a museum of local history.

At the nearby lake Chebarkul there are several recreational and spas, as Kissegatsch ( Кисегач ) and Jelowoje ( Еловое ).

Economy

The Ural Kusniza AG (" Uralschmiede " ) produced in Chebarkul castings and forgings and weldments for mechanical engineering. There is also a crane and a heating plant, plants, the construction and timber industries, as well as the light and food industries.
