Chiavari

Chiavari [' kja: vari ] ( Ciävai Ligurian ) is a municipality with 27,259 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Italian region Liguria, Genoa Province (GE).

Geography

The place is between Rapallo and Sestri Levante in the north to the south on the coast of the Gulf of Tigullio at the mouth of the river Entella and the railway Pisa - Genova. Chiavari covers an area of ​​about 20 square kilometers and extends forwardly of the Trebbia Valley to a height of about 50 m above sea level.

The neighboring municipalities are Zoagli in the north and in the south Lavagna. In other areas Rapallo and Nervi lie to the north and Sestri Levante and La Spezia in the south.

History

Founded as Clavarum (Latin Talschlüssel ), Chiavari leads today a key in his coat of arms. But recent excavations revealed a necropolis of already pre-Roman times to light.
