Daniel Russell Brown

Daniel Russell Brown ( born March 28, 1848 in Bolton, Tolland County, Connecticut, † February 28, 1919 in Providence, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician and 1892-1895 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years and political rise

Daniel Brown attended the public schools of his home. He then worked in a hardware store. He later became sales manager of such a business in Hartford. After a move to Providence, he was part owner of a company that sold spare parts for weaving. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. In 1872 he was elected to the City Council of Providence, where he remained for four years. In 1885 he refused to him being transferred candidacy for the office of mayor of this city. In the presidential election in 1888 he was one of the electors of Benjamin Harrison.

Governor of Rhode Iceland

In 1892 he was elected governor of his state. His re-election in 1893 was made by the legislature, because there was no clear majority in the election. His third election in 1894, was back on the regular way. Overall, it was between 31 May 1892 and dedicated May 29, 1895 Governor of Rhode Iceland. During this time the state constitution was reformed. In future elections ranged from a relative majority of votes for an election victory. Also during his tenure free textbooks were introduced in schools and expanded the road network of the state.

In 1896, Brown was brought by the New England states as a candidate for the vice-presidency this week. However, the nomination along with William McKinley went to Garret Hobart, who died in 1899. Daniel Brown devoted himself then back to his private interests. He died in February 1919. Together with his wife Isabel Barrows he had three children.
