Herbert W. Ladd

Herbert Warren Ladd (* October 15, 1843 in New Bedford, Massachusetts, † November 29, 1913 ) was an American politician and 1889-1890 and 1891-1892 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years

After leaving school, Ladd sold for some time haberdashery, before he began working for the newspaper " New Bedford Mercury ." Ladd participated in the Civil War as a soldier in various units from Rhode Iceland. Following this he went back into the dry goods business, which he now operation in Boston. Upon his return to Rhode Iceland, he founded the HW Ladd Company.

Political Rise and Governor of Rhode Iceland

Herbert Ladd was a member of the Republican Party. He was Vice President of the Trade Committee and president of the Society for the Prevention of violence against children. In 1889, Ladd was a candidate for the office of the governor of Rhode Iceland. Since none of the candidates achieved an absolute majority, the legislature had to determine the new governor. These chose Ladd, who thus could officiate as governor between 28 May 1889 27 May 1890. In 1890 he was defeated in trying his re-election against John Davis. In 1891 he was re-elected by the legislature for a year as governor. His second term began on May 26, 1891, ending May 31, 1892, was uneventful.

After the expiration of his term of office, Ladd again devoted his private affairs. He died in November 1913. Together with his wife Emma F. Burrows he had four children.
