Donogh O'Malley

Donogh O'Malley ( Irish: Ó Maille Donnchadha; * January 1921 in Limerick, County Limerick, † March 10, 1968 ) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

Biography

O'Malley came from an influential political family from Limerick. His older brothers Desmond O'Malley and Michael O'Malley was mayor of Limerick. His nephew Desmond O'Malley was a minister, and after the expulsion from the Fianna Fáil founder and longtime chairman of the Progressive Democrats.

He even worked after graduation as a civil engineer and started his career as a national candidate of Fianna Fáil in 1957 with the first election for deputies ( Teachta Dala ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he took after three subsequent re- elections until his death in the constituency of Limerick East.

In 1961 he was for a short time also Lord Mayor of Limerick, but was shortly afterwards by Taoiseach (Prime Minister ) Seán Lemass appointed parliamentary secretary to Finance Minister, and thus took his first government post.

On April 21, 1965 Prime Minister Lemass appointed him to the then Minister of Health. After the inauguration of Lemass 's successor Jack Lynch, he was appointed Minister of Education in this then on 13 July 1966, Minister kept this office until his unexpected death at the age of 47 years on 10 March 1968.

As Education Minister, he was especially known for his large-scale reforms. On the one hand there was the introduction of the Regional College of Technology in areas where there is no tertiary education sectors were before. He also campaigned for the establishment of the University of Limerick, to which it, however, came only in 1972. On the other hand, he failed in his attempt, however, the merger of Trinity College and University College in Dublin, despite support from the then Justice Minister Brian Lenihan, who succeeded him as Minister of Education was after his death.
