The Flattnitz is associated to the municipality Glödnitz health resort in Carinthia. It lies on a plateau of the Gurktaler Alps, which forms a transition between the Gurk and the Mur valley. On the Styrian side pass road ends in barn on the Mur. The summit, called Flattnitz height, located at 1400 m above sea level. A., in its near a small lake, the lake Flattnitz.

It is believed that there was already a Roman post or supply station on the Flattnitz.

The name " Flattnitz " comes from the same stream, which flows through the village towards Mur. It can be on Blato ( Slow: Moss ) lead back. Worth seeing is the Romanesque church of the former importance by mule trains and mining (see also mining in Carinthia ) originates.

Commonly also the west end of the valley of the subsequent Paalbaches is counted for Flattnitz, which belongs to the municipality of German attacks, but is not accessible from the latter.

History

In a deed of Emperor Arnulf at the Noble Zwentibold the area around Flattnitz is first recorded in 898. Of great economic importance were the silver, iron and lead deposits. Flattnitz served as Gurk bishops as a summer residence, Bishop Henry I left in 1173, the round church of Saint John the Baptist building. In 1478 the Turks invaded and made the Flattnitz for " Bloody Alm ". The alpine region of the Flattnitz saddle is today visited by summer and winter travelers.

Attractions

Church

Of the Romanesque chapel from the second half of the 12th century only a few residues in today's masonry are obtained. The early Gothic Rotunda was built around 1330 with a main choir, two polygonal apses and a fortified tower vestry. The relatively low, massive tower with pyramid helmet is determinative of the outside view. Together with the former hospital cultivation in the west is the picturesque church assembly. The whole ensemble of buildings is covered with gray Steinplattln.

Lime kiln dating from the 17th century

Since the Flattnitz around the 17th century was dominated by mining, is located at this location ( administratively, it stood at the municipality of German handles) today a lime kiln from this period. This was used for the production of Mauerkalk. This stone lime kiln is worth seeing because of the good preservation.

Amthaus

The official or toll house is located near the church above the main road ⊙ 46.94259214.034372. It is one of the oldest office buildings in Austria and is probably the oldest of Carinthia. The partly built with rubble partly as a log cabin house has a covered with wooden shingles Vollwallmdach. The building is a listed building.

Resident

The Flattnitz is a scattered settlement with approximately 200 inhabitants. The residents work mainly in the year-round tourism and alpine grazing.

Tourism

There are three ski lifts and several runs of varying difficulty levels, as well as a 15 km long cross- country ski trail. Furthermore, there are many natural trails in Flattnitz and environment.
