Football at the 1980 Summer Olympics

The XXII. 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow was held in a football competition. In the finals, the teams of the GDR, which had won four years previously the gold medal for the first time and Czechoslovakia, who won this time were. For Czechoslovakia remained the only title with an intercontinental football competition. The team of the USSR could not use the home advantage and only reached the 3rd place.

The German national football team of amateurs difference in the qualifier against Norway, but would not have participated due to the Olympic boycott by qualification.

Boycott

Due to the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan, many Western countries and their allies boycotted the Olympics. This also affected the football competition. Here is an overview of the countries which have qualified for the tournament, but not competed (in parentheses are the States which were invited instead. ):

  • Africa: Egypt ( Nigeria) and Ghana ( Zambia)
  • N- America: United States (Cuba)
  • S America: Argentina ( Venezuela)
