Fraga

Fraga is a city in the province of Huesca in the Autonomous Region of Aragón in Spain and at the same time capital of Valle Bajo Cinca. The geographically very extensive community had 14,834 inhabitants on 1 January 2013. Located in the valley of the Cinca Fraga is the largest place of traditional Catalan Franja de Aragón (the local dialect means fragatino or fragatí ). The city has two parts connected by bridges to both banks of the Cinca, Fraga la Vieja and Las Afueras ( Fraga la Nueva ) and an industrial area.

History

The settlement of the town dates back to pre-Roman times. North of the city was the Roman Villa Fortunatus. It is thought that it could be at the said city by Ptolemy Gallica Flavia Fraga.

After the Muslim conquest in 714, the city of Medina Afraga, which was responsible for the historic center was built. After the fall of the Caliphate of Córdoba in 1010, the city came under the rule of Zaragoza and Lleida. King Alfonso I tried in 1134 at the Battle of Fraga in vain to conquer it. Simultaneously with Lleida it was conquered in 1149. As a result, the city was disputed between Aragon and Catalonia. 1391 Fraga was a market. 1610, the Moors were expelled. In the War of Spanish Succession in 1709 Fraga received the designation " ciudad " and in 1710 the title of " vence dora y fidelisima ".

In the War of Independence Fraga was occupied by French troops. During the Civil War the city was under anarcho-syndicalist rule.

Religious affiliation

From 1149 to 1995 the town belonged to the diocese of Lleida, since the diocese Barbastro - Monzón.
