Tamarite de Litera

Tamarite de Litera (Catalan Tamarit de Llitera ) is a Catalan-speaking, the Franja de Aragón associated municipality in the province of Huesca of the autonomous community of Aragon in Spain. It is the historic capital of La Litera, located in the foothills of the Pyrenees.

History

It is believed that Tamarite was already settled in the Iberian period. In 1064 it was conquered by the Aragonese, but was already two years later lost. King Alfonso I conquered Tamarite in 1107, but fell again in 1134 to the Moors. A final success achieved the Reconquista until 1149 by Pedro de Estopiñán. In the Middle Ages Tamarite was considered one of the major centers of the Kingdom, and later of the crown of Aragon. 1408 the place that changed his affiliation between Aragon and Catalonia, the title of a city was awarded. In 1642 Tamarite was plugged and destroyed by French- Catalan troops on fire. This turmoil ended only with the accession of the Bourbon dynasty in the early 18th century. The connection to Catalonia eventually consisted only in belonging to the diocese of Lleida until the end of the 20th century. In 1834, started the construction of the canal from Tamarite, the later channel from Aragon and Catalonia. This irrigation canal passes from the water of Ésera and Cinca to irrigate an area of ​​about 100,000 ha. During the Spanish Civil War, Tamarite was in Republican territory and was bombed by the Spanish Nationalist forces before it was occupied in the spring of 1938 by the Franco's troops. Tamarite eventually lost its position as the administrative center of the literature on Binéfar.

Economy

Is predominant in the primary sector with pigs and cattle and fruit (apples, pears, peaches).
