Grand Prix (Cannes Film Festival)

The Grand Jury Prize ( Grand Prix du Jury or Grand Prix) honored at the annually organized film festivals of Cannes the most original film in competition ( feature film ) and those having the greatest spirit of research. The second most important award for the Golden Palm was first awarded as the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury at the thirteenth edition of the film festival in 1967 and replaced the previously awarded Prix spécial du Jury. Since 1990, the price is commonly referred to as Grand Prix. The awarding of the prize, which is awarded to the winner in the form of a deed, agrees the competition jury, usually composed of international filmmakers.

Award winners

The most frequently with the Grand Jury Prize awarded the works of French and Italian film directors ( each with 9 wins), followed by their counterparts from the United States (5 ) and the UK (4). Two awards were given to the Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky (1972 and 1986 ), Frenchman Bruno Dumont (1999 and 2006), the Turk Nuri Bilge Ceylan (2003 and 2011) and the Italian Matteo Garrone (2008 and 2012 ).

Multiple in the past, the jury could not agree on a winner. Film directors in the German cinema were successful in 1975, when Werner Herzog ( everyone against everyone for himself and God ) was able to beat the competition. He was succeeded by Wim Wenders, the 1993 Faraway, So Close! was excellent. A small scandal, there were at the ceremony in 1995, when the Greek Theo Angelopoulos ( Ulysses' Gaze ) the price with the words " If that's what you have to give me, I have nothing to say " who accepted disappointed and the stage left after he had been forced to cede the Palme d'Or at Emir Kusturica ( Underground). Three years later Angelopoulos should receive the Palme d'Or for his film Eternity and a day ( 1998).

In the past, juries had the opportunity to combine the Grand Prix with other awards. This happened most recently in 2003, when Turkey's contribution Uzak - got wide also awarded the Best Actor Award for the actors Muzaffer Özdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak. Meanwhile prohibited the regulations that the Grand Prize of the Jury (as well as the Palme d'Or and Best Director Award ) can be combined with other awards. This fact has been repeatedly criticized, most recently in 2012, when the jury president Nanni Moretti admitted in the final press conference that he would have given the Golden Palm winner Love by Michael Haneke without regulations also awarded the Best Actor and Screenplay Award.
